A Branch Given Willingly
Submitted to the Open Corner by Gerald Fig for The Kettle Press.
When I was little, the wizards used to laugh at me for always thanking my broom. My parents were witches, and hope one day I might be too. Never had much if a knack for magic, but I've always had good eyes, which by their thinking is half the battle. As people grow up they tend to stop seeing fairies and magic so well, as life gets busier people just have less time for looking. And, true enough, for their part fairies don't often like to be seen so it suits them just fine. Most everyone can see the little shimmers if they put their mind to it, they've all seen a thing or two out of place or wrong, but it's just easier to pretend you didn't. Life gets complicated when you see too many things.
I remember my parents telling me, where our brooms get their names, many trees were once people too, they said, and it was best to er on the side of caution when you spotted a peculiar pattern in the bark. These trees, especially those found in shifting woods, have some miraculous properties. The most sought after staffs, wands and broomsticks are made from shifting wood. If you ask nicely, many of these trees are happy to gift a branch to a polite witch, the best brooms are always given freely. That's why the witches brooms have names, to honour those kind souls and why witches murmur to the leaves and mosses in the quiet hours of the morning.
But the wizards - the wizards have forgotten how to listen to the trees. They've long since convinced themselves that the Fae and [[The Oaken|the treekin]] are only as real as you let them be, so they do not ask for branches, they simply take. And then they laugh at us witches without ever knowing that the very staff they carry was once called Stephen, and liked to plant daffodils for the spring, or that he was scared of badgers and the colour purple. They would never know, because that had forgotten how to ask.
